Advanced District Nursing

This course is aimed at experienced registered nurses with experience in acute or primary care settings, who wish to build on their experience and transfer their learning in order to develop the higher level of knowledge and skills required for specialist and advanced practice in district nursing. It aims to equip students with contemporary knowledge to take forward the rapidly changing primary care agenda. It will enable a critical, innovative and reflective approach to address the healthcare needs of individuals, families, carers, groups and communities. Students need to be sponsored or supported by an NHS Board in order to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for practice assessment. This course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Entry requirements

You should be a Registered Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Normally students will have had the opportunity to consolidate their pre-registration training and have a first degree. Acceptance is based on having acceptable references from two sources and evidence of SCQF level 9 learning in the last 5 years or equivalent and satisfactory clearance from Disclosure Scotland's Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme.

You will study: evidence-based health and social care; improving health and wellbeing; contemporary district nursing practice; advanced approaches to patient assessment and history taking; clinical decision making; clinical leadership; management of long term conditions; community practitioner prescribing; practice development; practice consolidation.
