Our university was founded by two social reformers who pioneered the ideal of education and knowledge for all who could benefit. Their vision lives on today. As one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities, we are home to some of the world’s foremost authorities in the sciences, arts, business, economics and law. As teachers and researchers they change lives, expand minds and help current and future leaders understand power and responsibility. Students and academics travel from all over the world to study and work here, ensuring a global perspective within a close knit, safe and historic campus.
Royal Holloway has a beautiful campus set in 135 acres of parkland plus central London study facilities are just a train journey away.
You’ll be part of a friendly and supportive environment while living in high-quality student accommodation, whether on campus or close by in the local area.
Royal Holloway offers a range of postgraduate study including Masters (taught programmes), Masters by research, Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma and Graduate Diploma.
Most Masters degrees can be taken over one year full-time or between two and five years part-time, which can be extended if the course includes a year in industry option.
Teaching at all levels is undertaken by staff with a real command of their subject so you’ll be taught by an expert in the field – sometimes the leading expert – and share in his or her knowledge and enthusiasm. Teaching methods for postgraduate taught degrees and diplomas are as varied as the programmes themselves. Significant emphasis is placed on private study and assessed work. Full-time students might only be required to attend two or three timetabled sessions per week.
Assessment is also varied. Some degrees and diplomas have a mixture of coursework and unseen examinations, while others rely solely on assessed coursework such as a portfolio of essays. A dissertation or project based on independent research is a feature of most Masters degrees.
We also offer a broad portfolio of bursaries and scholarships usually awarded for academic success, or excellence in sport or music, to support taught postgraduate students. Royal Holloway works with a number of external scholarship providers to ensure you have a wide range of funding options open to you and awards are available for both UK and overseas applicants.
Our students join a research-led environment in which academic staff are working at the frontiers of their subjects. This means our postgraduate programmes reflect the latest thinking and offer exciting intellectual challenges.
Royal Holloway generates original research of national and international importance fuelled by a global network of collaboration, which regularly garners national media attention.
In the Research Excellence Framework (REF), published in December 2014, it was confirmed that Royal Holloway sits within the top 25% of UK universities for research which is rated as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.
