Medieval Studies

The multi disciplinary programme encourages students to explore many different aspects of the Middle Ages; historical, literary, and archaeological; all the courses emphasise the skills that research students need and provide an introduction to source material of all kinds, both printed and manuscript.

Entry requirements

Minimum good 2nd class Honours degree in English (single or joint Honours) or a related discipline, or equivalent; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 7 in writing and 6 in other areas, TOEFL 600, or equivalent.

Course modules

Research development course; medieval London; medieval narratives; Arthurian literature; magic, miracle, and medicine in medieval England; the court in England and Europe, c.1350-c.1450; Byzantium and the first crusade; the visual and the verbal: approaches to medieval art and literature; the English reformation and its medieval background; Byzantium and the fourth crusade; Latin for medievalists; reading middle English; reading old English; museum skills.

Assessment methods

Examinations, essays and a dissertation.

Various full and partial awards may be sought, including Arts and Humanities Research Board studentships and College scholarships.
