International Security

The core of the course traces the security studies discipline from its traditional approaches through its evolution to include ever more transnational dynamics. Students can tailor the course to their specific interests through optional units in subjects such as political violence, biopolitics, media, communication and conflict, international law of targeting, and regional international politics. Students will be provided with both a firm academic foundation in the security studies discipline and a base of knowledge for careers in fields of policymaking, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and more.

UK upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2:1) or equivalent. Mature students with substantial work experience will also be considered. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require ELTS 6.5 overall with 7.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other subscores.

Core modules include: Transnational security studies; introduction to quantitative research methods in politics and international relations; introduction to qualitative methods in politics and international relations; foundations of contemporary political theory; research design in politics and international relations; dissertation. Elective modules include: Africa and international politics; biopolitics and security; China in the world; comparative political executives; contemporary continental political theory; culture and community; democracy and citizenship in Europe; democracy in comparative perspective; foreign policy of the European union; human rights; identity, power and radical political theory; issues in United States foreign policy; internet and new media politics; media, war and conflict; political violence; the politics of ethnic multiculturalism; politics of forced migration; sovereignty, rights, and justice; theories of globalisation; transnational security and the law of targeting.

Revolutions and Rebellion in International Politics;
Dissertation

A wide range of optional modules are also available.

Assessment methods

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework, examinations and a dissertation.
