This specialist course gives students with a passion for sport and writing a head start working in sports journalism and related careers. Students: develop the traditional and new media skills needed to work in the area; learn how to manage print, broadcast, online and social media; benefit from links with major broadcasting and newspaper organisations, and major sports clubs; undertake work placements at sports organisations and media sports departments.
Degree in any discipline from a recognised UK institution or its international equivalent, or relevant professional experience; overseas applicants from countries whose 1st language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English; an IELTS score of 6.5 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English; previous experience of journalism is preferable, but not necessary; broad experience or knowledge of sport is helpful.
Modules include: being a journalist; law and society; production and editing skills in radio and TV; sports journalism; specialist editorial skills: working in the newsroom; specialised production skills: television/radio; sport and the media.
Assessment methods include: coursework, critical evaluation, dissertation or project, a combination of practical and theoretical work.
