Advanced Materials Engineering

This course is for practicing engineers or graduates who want to become technical specialists or managers in industrial and manufacturing companies; it increases career potential by improving knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering, technical and problem-solving skills, management skills, and ability to take on greater responsibility; students also develop their understanding of current best practice in the theory and application of leading edge technologies, processes and systems in mechanical engineering.

Entry requirements

UK students normally need 1 from: an Honours degree (2.2 or above) in a science or engineering subject, suitable professional qualifications in an engineering field, a degree in any discipline plus at least 1 year of relevant experience, a diploma in a technological area plus at least 3 years of relevant experience; overseas students: overseas applicants from countries whose 1st language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English; an IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English; Indian students need a 1st Class BE in a relevant discipline, or a good 2nd Class BE with a strong performance in mechanical and manufacturing subjects; Chinese students need a 4-year Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, with an overall average of at least 80 per cent or equivalent; students from other countries need a good Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.

Course modules

Core management modules: Finance and marketing; project and quality management.
Core technical modules: Advance investigatory techniques for materials engineers; advanced metallic materials; competitive materials technology; group project (international product development); sustainability, energy and environmental management; plus 1 chosen from; advanced manufacturing technology; CAD/CAM; engineering for sustainability; equipment engineering and design; finite element/finite difference analysis.

Assessment methods

Examination, coursework, project reports.
