International Journalism

The course is an integrated multimedia journalism course that prepares students for a career in the global journalism industry. It equips students to create high quality news reports and features for multiple platforms including newspapers, magazines, online, television or radio. Students learn how to use a range of social media techniques to research and develop a story and to engage in a dialogue with the audience. Students can choose options to meet their own interests as a journalist from print, magazine, broadcast, online and sports. They will learn how to work effectively in a multi-media newsroom, using a wide range of techniques to publish news and features, understand how to develop a story, identify relevant sources and questions and recognise the ethical considerations of a story and master the skill of writing copy that is accurate and engaging.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold an Honours degree (2.2 or above) or equivalent in any subject and posess a good standard of written and spoken English. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent (with a minimum 5.5 in each component).

Course modules

Semester 1 core modules: Writing for the media; radio journalism; magazine journalism. Semster 1 optional modules: Sports journalism 1; media law and regulation 1; practical public relations and professional experience. Semester 2 core modules: Print and online reporting; TV journalism; international journalism and public relations. Semester 2 optional modules: Sports journalism; media law and regulation 2; public affairs ; public relations (politics and lobbying). Semester 3 core modules: International journalism project.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include coursework, critical evaluation, dissertation or project and a combination of practical and theoretical work.
