Public Health

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed to work at an operational, managerial or strategic level in public health. Whether working in primary healthcare, community health or health activism, it offers the skills to help students further their careers. Students: explore the links between public health policy, evidence and practice; study the 10 key public health competencies and standards needed to join the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health specialists; gain work experience through a placement if they haven't worked in public health before.

Entry requirements

Normally a degree or other qualification at an equivalent level plus experience in the field of public health or research; if English is not the student's 1st language they typically need an IELTS 6.5 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: contemporary approaches to promoting health; health, culture and the global age; public health evidence: synthesis and analysis; public health evidence: intelligence and epidemiology; social determinants of health; the public health policy process; dissertation.
Options: food, diet and the new public health agenda; perspectives on sexuality; public health practice.

Assessment methods

Essays, presentation of seminars, seminar papers, case studies. There are no examinations.
