Secondary Physical Education

This secondary teacher training course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests. Students complete teaching placements in 2 11�16 or 11�18 schools. This allows the student to experience the progression from Key Stage 3 to 5. The PGCE also gives the student 60 Master's level credits, which students can use towards a Master's degree.Students study and complete teaching placements, to develop the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm needed to teach pupils with a range of abilities in both secondary school and college settings.

Entry requirements

All applicants need GCSE mathematics and English language at grade C or above (or equivalent); students consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs; student must also have a degree in an appropriate discipline and a sound understanding of the broad physical education curriculum in schools; prior to application, some voluntary work experience in the classroom would be invaluable; international students must also have an IELTS score of 6.5.

Course modules

Modules include: Developing and reflecting on professional practice in secondary physical education; learning and teaching in context in physical education; block placement 1; block placement 2.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include research projects, individual and group work, presentations and reports, preparing teaching materials and plans and teaching practice.

TDA funding and support is only available for successful applicants who possess a 2.2 degree or above (or equivalent).
