Sheffield Hallam University
Students embark on an intensive, supervised piece of investigative work and build an original area of expertise; they choose from a wide range of research topics supported by a supervisory team and write an extended 80,000 word thesis. Students: build on previous academic or professional experience to develop their expertise; benefit from the input of research-active staff; take taught modules from the MRes programme to develop their research skills; engage with other students and staff through the Faculty of Development and Society Graduate School website hub.
A relevant Master�s degree; or a 1st or upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent. Direct PhD registration may be permitted if students hold a Master�s degree, or an overseas Master�s degree of equivalent standard, which is postgraduate according to the UK Quality Assurance Agency�s National Qualifications Framework; and included training in research and a research-based project report/dissertation or equivalent. If English is not applicants 1st language: IELTS score of at least 7.0 and/or a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based exercise) or 250 (computer-based exercise).
Students submit their research programme for approval by the University�s Research Degrees Committee. To confirm the PhD stage, students complete a report and an oral presentation. Final assessment is via thesis and viva.
