Technical Architecture

Study technical architecture at a university that has been awarded centre of excellence status by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). This course is suitable for architectural technology and architecture graduates, and those from associated built environment, engineering and design disciplines. Students: develop advanced architectural skills in technical, environmental and digital design; devise their own major design or research project in the field of technical architecture: travel to global destinations on an international field trip; use this course to move from areas such as construction or engineering into an architecture related career.

Entry requirements

Normally a good 2.2 degree or above (or international equivalent degree) in architecture or architectural technology. We also welcome applications from graduates from construction, engineering and environmental undergraduate courses. Consideration is also given to those without prior university qualifications who have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience. All applications should ideally be accompanied with a digital portfolio. Where it is difficult to provide a portfolio we will invite applicants to an interview. A high level of English language competence is needed to successfully complete the course. Non-native speakers of English typically need IELTS 6.0 and no component (listening, reading, writing and speaking) below 5.5.

Course modules

Core modules: concepts and design in technical architecture; environmental theory and practice for technical architecture; fundamentals of building information modelling; applied research methods; major project. Optional modules include: interdisciplinary practice; contemporary digital practice in architecture; consultancy project; historic environments and design; academic and professional portfolio.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: design projects; technical and environmental studies; digital modelling; essays; report writing; group projects; presentations; research reports; dissertation or major design project.
