Developmental Psychology

Students gain an understanding of how humans develop, mentally, socially and behaviourally, throughout life, from infancy to old age, on a course accredited by the British Psychology Society. As well as gaining Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) required to start a career as a psychologist, students also gain research skills and a professional level of understanding in this specialist area. Students learn about all aspects of developmental psychology; gain GBR status, the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist; improve key skills such as critical thinking, report writing and data analysis; take the chance to teach developmental psychology on undergraduate programmes.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree or above in psychology or a related subject or equivalent; graduates with relevant work experience may be considered; international students typically need equivalent qualifications. If 1st language is not English: IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other skills. Alternatively a Sheffield Hallam University pre-sessional English course will enable students to achieve an equivalent English score.

Course modules

Modules include: theoretical and applied perspectives in developmental psychology; cognitive development; developmental social psychology; psychobiology and development; psychology of differential development; developmental practicals; research methods and statistics: fundamentals in design and statistics, advanced statistics and design; developmental psychology dissertation; lifespan and cross cultural perspectives on health and illness.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: coursework essays; research protocols; research reports; journal article reviews; sample lectures; individual research project.
