Secondary Science (Chemistry)

This course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests. It equips the student to teach National Curriculum Science at key stage 3 and 4 and also prepares the student to teach chemistry at a higher level at key stage 4 and at post-16. Students apply their skills and knowledge in a school context. The PGCE also gives the student 60 Master's level credits, which students can use towards a Master's degree.

Entry requirements

All applicants need GCSE mathematics, science and English language at grade C or above, or equivalent. We consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining GCSEs. Applicants must hold an Honours degree (normally 2.2 or above) or equivalent which includes substantial elements of chemistry. Applicants are encouraged to gain experience of schools through direct observation of teaching and learning and/or by working with young people in science-related or other educational activities. Applicants must also successfully complete pre-entry tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. Interviews are part of the selection process for this course. Applicants mus complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms. If English is not your 1st language you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: developing and reflecting on professional practice in secondary chemistry; learning and teaching in context in science; block placement 1; block placement 2.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include academic assignments including practice-based essays, individual and group work, presentations and reports, preparing teaching materials and plans and teaching practice.

TDA funding and support is only available for successful applicants who possess a 2.2 degree or above (or equivalent).
