Students embark on an intensive, supervised piece of investigative work and build their own original area of expertise. Students can choose from a wide range of research topics, from renaissance literature to creative writing. The way the PhD is completed can vary: from writing an extended 80,000 word thesis to a practice based PhD that comprises a 40,000 word thesis and one or more original creative works. Students build on previous academic or professional experience to develop their expertise; choose between traditional thesis-based research or practice-based research; take part in a vibrant research culture that includes training events and PhD seminars.
