Special Educational Needs Coordination

This course has been developed for those who are currently working as special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs). Students learn to develop inclusive cultures, and evaluate approaches to education. These new skills help make a difference in schools and to the wellbeing and achievement of young people who have special educational needs. Students: analyse and respond to current issues of practice through professional learning in the workplace; develop specialist knowledge enabling communication of current information regarding special educational needs and disabilities; study with other SENCOs and experienced SEN professionals supporting leadership of change.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be qualified as teachers and designated as the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO); an inclusion manager; in a position to undertake the duties of a SENCO. The course is designed for new SENCOs but applications from experienced SENCOs are also welcome.

Course modules

Modules include: SENCO as manager: evaluation and developing policy and provision; SENCO as leader: people, principles and partnerships.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: design professional guidance materials; presentations; research project; reflective journal.
