This course offers an internationally recognised professional qualification which opens up a wide range of career opportunities in planning and related fields such as regeneration and environment. Suitable for people with a range of academic backgrounds and those with work experience in planning, the course encourages an innovative approach to planning, with a focus on applying theory to contemporary practice by using real life case studies. Students: consider issues of sustainability and climate change alongside pressures of economic development; develop their professional management skills with modules on project management.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet general entry requirements and have a 1st degree, or international equivalent. For the part-time course, applicants without a 1st degree may be considered if they have extensive relevant experience, subject to the approval of the course leader and the Royal Town Planning Institute. Where English is not the applicants 1st language: IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: planning theory and context; applied research methods; policy for space and place; sustainable city ecologies; environment and infrastructure; planning and development process; economic planning and development; dissertation. Optional modules: comparative European planning; consultancy project.

Assessment methods

Coursework, practice focused assignments and a dissertation.
