Applied Sport and Exercise Science

This course is for people who want to work towards a career as a practitioner or researcher in the sports and exercise science industry. Students learn from researchers and practitioners working on a daily basis with elite athletes and study course material based on high-quality research from our specialist research centre. During the course, students can also work towards British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accreditation.

Entry requirements

Normally 1 of the following: a good 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in sport or exercise science; a good Honours degree in a relevant science discipline with suitable content; an alternative qualification with a suitable concentration of relevant science (at the discretion of the course leader); a qualification in science or sport or exercise science at a level lower than 1st degree coupled with relevant practical experience; the course leader interviews applicants with non-standard qualifications; if the student's 1st language is not English they must normally produce evidence of competence in English such an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: research methods: process and planning; research methods: analysis and presentation; scientific support.
Biomechanics modules: measurement techniques in physiology, biomechanics and performance analysis; muscle function and mechanics; improving performance; movement co-ordination and skill acquisition.
Psychology modules: psychology of sport and performance; physical activity and health behaviour change; applied techniques in sport and exercise psychology; movement co-ordination and skill acquisition.
Strength and conditioning modules: measurement techniques in physiology, biomechanics and performance analysis; muscle function and mechanics; movement co-ordination and skill acquisition; training and performance.

Assessment methods

Coursework assignments; essays; managing projects; problem solving exercises; group work; oral presentations; poster presentations; case studies; formal examinations; dissertation (for MSc only)
