Sports Engineering

This course aims to enhance students' technical, problem solving and engineering skills and learn to apply them to the sporting environment. Students also develop a biomechanical and physiological understanding of athletes, enabling them to analyse the athlete-equipment interactions in sport.

Entry requirements

Typically a 2.1 or above in a technical subject such as engineering, physics or mathematics; graduates from sports science degrees are welcome to apply if they can demonstrate sufficient expertise in mathematics and physics, for example good results at A-level, and have excelled in biomechanics throughout their undergraduate degree; non-native English speakers need to be proficient in English, typically shown by an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: industry linked research project; mechanics of sports equipment; measurement techniques in sports engineering and biomechanics; computer simulation of sports equipment; numerical programming in sports engineering; innovation and enterprise in sports engineering; human factors in sports engineering; physiology of sport and exercise; research methods; data analysis.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: examinations; coursework; presentations; research project thesis.
