Nursing (Public Health)

This course is designed for post-registration nurses who want to specialise in public health nursing roles such as health visitor or school nurse. Successfully completing it means students fulfil the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements to practise in these roles. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to work with children, young people, their families and carers to improve health. They learn to develop a pragmatic public health philosophy for family healthcare and an evidence-based skill set applicable to the challenges of current practice.

Entry requirements

Typically: to successfully apply for a student health visitor or student school nurse NHS training post; current registration on part 1 or 2 (nursing or midwifery) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) register; a nursing related degree (120 level-6 academic credits); Disclosure and Disbarment check; self-declaration of good health and character as required by the NMC; applicants are normally selected through a joint interview with the employing healthcare organisation.

Course modules

Modules include: person-centred primary care and public health; behaviour change; preventative approaches to safeguarding; transformational practice through leadership and management; practice learning; nurse prescribing (V100); research methods for practice; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: critiques/critical reflection; reports; essays; objective structured clinical examination; examinations; individual and group presentations; portfolio including prescribing workbook, reflection and practice assessment document; research dissertation; e-learning activities (distance learning).
