International Events and Conference Management

This course prepares students for a career in a global industry that has grown significantly in recent years. They develop the skills and qualifications needed to work in either global leisure or corporate events, or both. They choose either a one year full-time MSc, or an MSc with a work placement, offering additional experience and the opportunity to make connections in industry. Students: learn about managing both leisure, and business and corporate events; understand new trends such as health and safety, sustainability and using new technologies; benefit from our well-established links with businesses in the UK and internationally; develop through real industry contact that includes visiting lectures and real life projects.

Entry requirements

Normally an Honours degree or recognised equivalent qualification; applications are welcome from those who have substantial management experience but do not have the normal entry requirements; they may be invited for an interview to discuss their particular background, experience and qualifications; through accreditation of prior learning students may be able to claim entry with credit or exemptions based on their existing qualifications, knowledge and experience; if English is not the student's 1st language they need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent for the non-work experience route, and an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent for the work experience route.

Core modules: sector industry analysis; marketing; events venues and facilities; managing people; events project management; research and consultancy project; contemporary conference management; research methods; dissertation; plus options; internationalisation of hospitality; sustainable tourism and hospitality in the 21st century; international cultural events; management decision making in food and beverage operations; tourism consultancy study visit; charity fundraising practice; revenue management; visitor attraction management

Assessment methods

Assessment includes: essays; management projects; problem solving exercises; group work and dissertation.
