This programme provides a coherent combination of courses in South Asian languages and their associated literatures and cultures.

Entry requirements

Minimum upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent.

Course modules

Literatures of South Asia; modern Bengal: the evolution of Bengali culture and society from 1690 to the present day; directed readings in the literature of a modern South Asian language; Sanskrit literature; Sanskrit texts from the Hindu tradition; culture and conflict in the Himalaya; the politics of culture in contemporary South Asia; Buddhist meditation in India and Tibet; the origins and development of yoga in ancient India.

Assessment methods

Dissertation.
