Public Financial Management

This programme provides students with a conceptual understanding of the core principles of public financial management, and with the development of capabilities and skills to apply theoretical and domain knowledge to problems encountered in the financial management of public sector organisations. It is aimed at students who wish to pursue a rigorous, scientifically based course of study in the theories underpinning how public finances are managed; how public managers make sound financial decisions; what kind of techniques and tools are used in the financial management of public sector organisations; and how the financial management of public sector organisations is reported to the public.

Entry requirements

Minimum 1st degree with good grades in any subject equivalent to a UK upper 2nd Class Honours.

Course modules

Core modules: Public financial management (planning and performance); public financial management (revenue); public financial management (financial reporting); public financial management (audit and compliance); research methods in management; dissertation. Optional modules (choose 1): Managing organisational change; macroeconomic policy and financial markets; managerial accounting; public policy and management (perspectives and issues); public policy and strategy; international human resource management.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include dissertation of 10,000 words.
