The course concentrates on the relationship between theory and language teaching practice; as such, the course starts with foundational aspects of language theory and language acquisition, which allow for subsequent reflection on more practical modules later in the course.
1st or 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant subject and at least 3 years' experience in education; non-graduates with appropriate professional qualifications considered.
The following modules are compulsory: language theory; language acquisition; research methods in applied linguistics; syllabus design and methodology in ELT. Optional modules: Structural description of English; sociolinguistics; evaluation and testing; teaching English to young learners; ELT practitioners: management and teacher development.
The British Council occasionally funds students from overseas.
