Theatre Directing

The course is designed to explore the art and techniques of theatre directing within the context of contemporary theatre making; it aims to enhance students' professional practice and to help students gain access to the theatre profession; modules are taught by both academics and theatre directors with the assistance of professional actors in the practical classes.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree in drama and some experience (student/fringe) of directing for the theatre. Occasionally, applicants may have a degree in another subject or no degree. In such cases a higher level of practical experience is expected, for example, considerable professional acting experience.

Course modules

Modules include: directing actors; contemporary theatre; artistic collaboration; directing devised theatre; business of directing; directing actors; artistic collaboration; directing devised theatre; final production.

Assessment methods

Assessment takes various forms. The 2 lecture seminar courses are assessed by 4,000 word essay, 2 of the modules have practical exercises and directing actors is assessed by a rehearsal exercise using professional actors in a scene of choice. Most of the assessment, however, is focused on the final production. Students are required to produce and direct a full-scale production with professional actors at a London fringe venue.
