Theology

The aim of the course is to give students: a depth of knowledge of biblical and theological study in the context of their practical application; an ability to work at and with advanced levels of theoretical and/or research knowledge in the area of theology; an ability to critically analyse a diversity of primary and secondary sources; an ability to demonstrate comprehension and critically analyse a range of themes, debates and methods of the discipline and where appropriate related disciplines; an ability to engage confidently in academic and professional communication with others in the field; a reconnection with their own spirituality; skills of reflection and discernment whilst promoting their commitment to personal soul work; a deepening understanding of key aspects of the Christian pastoral tradition; an integration of theology into their lives; an understanding of emerging trends in pastoral care and spirituality in society; reconnection with current trends in academic scholarship.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree from a UK university in a relevant subject or equivalent. Students without such qualifications will be considered for admission if they are deemed to have substantial equivalent qualifications or experience. Applications may be accepted provisionally as 'associate' or probationary students. They may transfer to the full programme if their performance during the 1st semester of their registration is deemed of sufficiently high quality to justify this.

Course modules

Core modules: scripture and pastoral theology; scripture and systematic theology; ecclesiology and liturgy; research and reflective practice; dissertation. Optional modules on offer from 3 pathways. Pathway 1 systematic theology: Newman to Vatican 2; chaplaincy in context; catechetics and religious education; Christian spirituality; Christian spiritual direction; church law in pastoral ministry. Pathway 2 chaplaincy studies: themes in contemporary theology; catechetics and religious education; Christian spirituality; Christian spiritual direction; Newman to Vatican 2; church law in pastoral ministry. Pathway 3 Christian spirituality: Christian spiritual direction; themes in contemporary theology; catechetics and religious education; chaplaincy in context Newman to Vatican 2; church law in pastoral ministry.

Assessment methods

Assessments for modules include seminar presentations, essays and logbooks.
