International Tourism Development

This course has been designed for people wishing to work in or study the area of tourism development. It provides an in-depth grounding in tourism development and practice and options which can be tailored towards individual needs. It enables students to: demonstrate an awareness of social, political, economic, and cultural issues affecting tourism development in an international context; identify and demonstrate an understanding of key issues in international tourism development; have experience of in-depth study of tourism development via a fieldwork delivered module; complete a dissertation based on a project relating to a particular interest; acquire knowledge and understanding of the ethical issues relating to tourism development in an international context.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree (usually 2nd Class or above) in tourism, development studies, geography, management studies, or environmental studies (or an appropriate 1st degree which contains a substantive tourism or management studies element) from a recognised university or equivalent. Applicants who do not have an Honours degree will have to have appropriate professional experience in the tourism industry or development sector, combined with evidence of capacity to study at Master's level. Non-native speakers of English must achieve a score of at least 6.5 in the IELTS test of English language proficiency (or equivalent). This must include a score of at least 6 in any section.

Course modules

Core modules: tourism and development; planning theories and concepts; tourism practice; research methods; planning and developing tourist destinations. Optional modules: tourism in developing countries; planning and development tourist destinations; sustainable development and tourism; issues in international tourism.
