This course has a high proportion of technical content, giving students the ability to ensure the strength and reliability of safety-critical products. You will have the opportunity to use a wide range of software tools for design and simulation, including PTC CREO, ANSYS Finite Element Analysis, and Cambridge Engineering Selector. We have a design studio with over 70 workstations and manufacturing facilities including CNC machining and rapid prototyping systems, as well as a fully equipped test laboratory. This course will provide you with significant skills in the major engineering functions allowing you to work in a senior technical or project management role within industry. It consists of eight taught modules plus a major personal project leading to a written thesis. The taught modules cover the broad range of activities involved in designing and validating new products and machinery. You will study topics such as solid and surface modelling, rapid prototyping, Finite Element Analysis, advanced materials and thermodynamics. The subject area of your final thesis can be selected to suit your own aspirations and interests. You will be assigned a supervisor with whom you will work closely to develop an academically challenging portfolio of work.
Modules include: Research methods and project management; energy management; design technologies for master; structural integrity; quality and project management for technology; and a project. Optional modules may include: technical paper authoring; advanced design strategies; applied structural integrity; robotics and automation; control system design; sustainable design and manufacture; and an industrial placement.
