Computer Science (distance learning)

This award is designed to broaden understanding and knowledge of computing science, and enhance the ability to apply this within industry or commerce; also in addition to gaining an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies, it also develops further the competence and ability to apply them, particularly through the inclusion of an optional period in industry as an integral part of the course; the award has 3 stages; in the first stage students study 1 core and 3 option modules; in the second stage (postgraduate diploma), students can choose a further 4 option modules; in between the postgraduate certificate and dissertation students can undertake an optional 12 month placement; the final stage of the award gives students the opportunity to pursue at depth a computing topic of their choosing by submitting a dissertation.

Entry requirements

UK 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent in a related computing discipline; those who lack the academic requirements but with significant appropriate experience are considered on an individual basis; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based).

Course modules

Core modules: Personal development and research methods; dissertation (60 credits); optional modules may include: low-level game programming; advanced game programming concepts; computer graphics; object oriented software systems engineering; mobile applications and systems; mobile computer communications systems; network systems and technologies; interaction design; internet applications; forensic computing concepts; methods and issues of e-investigation; multimedia research; strategic planning and systems development; advanced computing investigation topics; enterprise applications; survey design and statistical data analysis; knowledge management; database design and development; media editing and multimedia applications; programming for web applications; web multimedia; game engine programming; low-level game programming; advanced game programming concepts; game industry software development practice; game artificial intelligence.
