An in-depth insight into the key technological areas that are driving mechatronic system design; the course centres around the application of electrical mechanical and electronic engineering specialisms to the analysis, synthesis, design and application of mechatronic systems such as robotics, automation and industrial process control; advanced software tools such as ProEngineer Wildfire, ANSYS FEA, DFMA and advanced hardware such as 3-dimensional laser scanning, Rapid Prototyping systems, analogues and digital system analysis and design software are used for design exercises; the computer-based design and analysis approach is backed up by clear explanations of the underlying theoretical principles; the course consists of a taught programme followed by an individual project.
2nd class Honours degree or equivalent in a related engineering or technology discipline; if the student's 1st language is not English, they need to demonstrate that they are fluent enough to cope with the course; a minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
Core modules: Research methods and project management; quality and project management for technology; robotics and automation; project; optional modules: analogue systems and instrumentation; digital electronic systems; digital signal processing; design technologies for master; structural integrity; technical paper authoring; energy management; embedded real time systems; power semi-conductor devices; advanced design strategies; applied structural integrity; control system design; sustainable design and manufacture; industrial placement.
