Physical Activity and Public Health

This course covers the main area of public health, such as principles that underpin practice and epidemiology. It focuses on research method and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative inquiry (often used as evidence in health improvement), physical activity specific modules relating to disease prevention and critiquing interventions, and strategies around working with and engaging communities. Finally, there is an independent research project of your choice, with a specialist focus on physical activity.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally possess an Honours Class degree of (2.1) or above or equivalent, and have a minimum of one year professional experience working in a public health role, community, government setting or similar. We consider each application on its own merits however, and other qualifications and experience may be considered. Most students will already be working full-time in a related area. For those with a professional qualification, Accreditation of Prior Achievement (APA) can be considered. We will also require two references, a copy of your current curriculum vitae (CV) and evidence of existing higher educational qualifications. Those whose 1st language is not English need to demonstrate a minimum of: IELTS level 7.0 overall with level 7.0 in reading and writing specifically; or TOEFL 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or minimum of 100 (Internet-based test); or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English Grade B.

Course modules

Core modules: principles of epidemiology; research methods and data analysis; physical activity for health and disease prevention; physical activity interventions; working and engaging with communities; Master's research project (with a focus on physical activity).

Assessment methods

Modules are led by specialists and delivered sequentially with weekly activities and tasks which provide opportunities for those working on the physical activity agenda to enhance their critical understanding of the evidence base for action while drawing on their own experiential knowledge for professional development.
