The department is concentrated in the Research Centre for Contemporary German Culture (CCGC), with clusters in the following areas: the Eastern Turn in German literature and German-Turkish writing; film and literature about the Red Army Faction/Baader-Meinhof Group; crime fiction; the works of the Nobel Laureates, Elias Canetti, Günter Grass and Herta Müller. There is also expertise in feminist theory and women's writing and Austrian studies (Kafka, Schnitzler, Bachmann). Staff are involved in the Centre for Research into Gender in Culture and Society (GENCAS).

Entry requirements

Normally a good Honours degree (1st Class or 2.1) in a related subject or hold relevant work experience. For PhD entry, students should hold a minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1), or equivalent, and should also hold or expect to achieve a postgraduate Master's degree in a related subject. English language requirement IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or Swansea University recognised equivalent.
