Hispanic Studies

Research at Swansea is interdisciplinary with strong links to American studies through the Centre for the Comparative Study of the Americas (CECSAM). The department's focus is 20th-century Latin American fiction and testimonial writing with particular expertise in Argentinian studies. An advanced research degree in Spanish or Latin American studies gives students the chance to pursue a major project based around personal passions and interests, leading to a qualification which can open the door to an academic career or boost employment prospects outside academia (in the private sector, the civil service, education, or translation).

Entry requirements

For MPhil entry, normally a good Honours degree (1st class or 2.1) in modern languages, translation, interpreting or a related subject. For PhD entry, students should hold a minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1), or equivalent, and you should hold or be expecting to achieve a postgraduate Master's degree in a related subject. English language requirement IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or Swansea University recognised equivalent.

Assessment methods

A thesis of not more than 60,000 words for an MPhil and 90,000 words for a PhD which contributes significantly to the subject area and in the case of PhD is based on original research. This is followed by an oral examination of the thesis (viva) by 2 examiners who do not work in a supervisory capacity to the student, 1 of whom is external to the University.
