The department boasts a dynamic research and teaching environment which has already won attention and funding from outside bodies such as the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Wellcome Trust and the EU. Research proposals are invited on a wide range of topics, in particular involving the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh.
MPhil: A minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1), or equivalent, in a related subject. PhD: A minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1), or equivalent, and students should hold or expect to achieve a postgraduate Master�s degree in a related subject. English language requirement IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or Swansea University recognised equivalent.
A thesis of not more than 60,000 words for an MPhil and 90,000 words for a PhD which contributes significantly to the subject area and in the case of PhD is based on original research. This is followed by an oral examination of the thesis (viva) by two examiners, one of whom is external to the University.
