This course is designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree in the field of electrical engineering or in a similar relevant engineering or science discipline. Students will develop specialist skills aligned with the College of Engineering's research interests and reflecting the needs of the electronics industry. Students will have access to industry-standard equipment, such as a scanning tunnelling microscope for atomic scale probing or an hp4124 parameter analyzer for power devices used for simulation, implementation and communication. The College of Engineering held accreditation for all Electronic and Electrical Engineering Degrees from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) from September 1982 to August 2016. We are currently undergoing the re-accreditation process that will be completed in March 2017 which is for September 2016 to August 2021.

Course modules

Modules typically include: communication skills for research engineers; energy efficient electronics technologies; advanced power electronics and drives; wide band-gap electronics; power generation systems; power semiconductor devices; modern control systems; advanced power systems; signals and systems; digital communications; optical communications; probing at the nanoscale; RF and microwave; wireless communications; optical networks; nanoscale structures and devices.

Assessment methods

The award of the MSc is based on satisfactory performance in examinations, continuous assessment and research dissertation. The examinations are taken in January and May/June and, if passed satisfactorily, students move on to the full-time research project during the summer. The research dissertation is submitted in September and is examined externally.
