Trauma Surgery

This programme focuses on state of the art practical techniques and treatment strategies in major trauma, using small group teaching sessions, delivered by practicing clinicians who are experts in their fields. Improvements in the immediate (damage control) resuscitation have improved survival, underpinned by the lessons learnt from the most effective trauma systems in the developed world. Post injury reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation now offer potentials for recovery which were previously inconceivable.

Entry requirements

The programme is open to medical graduates who are post MRCS (or equivalent) and have also successfully completed the ATLS programme. The civilian programme is intended for those in the specialties of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Burns and Plastic Surgery and Maxillo-facial Surgery. However, applications from all surgical specialties are considered. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a credible commitment to a career in trauma surgery/care irrespective of their chosen specialty. Supportive references are required.

Course modules

Modules typically include: trauma (the disease); the turning point; healing and rehabilitation; regional trauma; definitive reconstruction; immediate management of burns; evidence based health and social care; health research methods and preparation for dissertation; dissertation.
