Surgical Care Practitioner (General Surgery)

Accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, this programme provides you with the comprehensive knowledge, and practical and technical skills required for the role of a cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgical care practitioner (SCP). With the support of your consultant surgeon mentor, your clinical area and the University, you study four modules that provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of an SCP. You also show your commitment to the ethos of a professional life and responsibilities which include lifelong learning, reflective practice, self-knowledge and continuing professional development to function as a valued member of the cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgical team. This course: provides you with the detailed and comprehensive knowledge, and the operative and technical skills needed as a SCP in cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery; develops your critical thinking and decision-making skills to practice autonomously within the guidelines of your SCP role in cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery; promotes the ethos of lifelong learning and continuing professional development to function as a valued member of the extended cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgical healthcare team; develops your research skills to search, retrieve, critically evaluate and synthesise the current evidence base underpinning cardiothoracic, general or orthopedic surgical care practice; and develops you as a practitioner providing high-quality care throughout the patient journey in cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery based on sound clinical evidence and good judgement.
