This is a programme of lectures and project work, encompassing a wide range of petroleum fundamentals, pertinent to the modern petroleum industry. Project work provides an opportunity for ideas and methods, assimilated through lectures and tutorials, to be applied to real field evaluation and development design problems. The course is applied in nature and has been designed so that on completion, you are technically well prepared for a career in industry.
Normally a 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. petroleum engineering, geology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, chemical engineering, petrophysics, or chemistry are acceptable). International applicants will be required to have a recognised English language qualification equivalent to at least IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5.
Core modules include: Drilling engineering and well completion; petroleum chemistry; petroleum economics (modelling and simulation); petroleum hydrocarbon production and operations technology; petroleum reservoir and enhanced oil recovery; research and study skills; individual project.
Assessment varies from module to module and can include in-course assignments, laboratory work, project dissertation, poster presentations and formal examinations.
