Social Research Methods

This programme helps students develop skills which enable the conduction of social research in any field; it is relevant for those wanting to improve or develop their ability to research and evaluate policy and practice ethically and professionally; in addition to developing high-level skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods it also helps develop skills to write research proposals, to bid for funding and to manage research; the course is suitable for those wishing to conduct research in an academic setting.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have a 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant field; however, those who have relevant professional qualifications and/or relevant experience are also considered; applicants without the normal entry requirements are required to undertake a skills audit and directed reading before submitting a 2,000-word essay on a related topic.

Course modules

Modules include: Conceptualising and designing social research; qualitative data analysis using NVivo; regression analysis; concepts and issues; social research methods; social research project.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed through a wide variety of methods including qualitative and quantitative research and analysis exercises, written reports, essays, CV development and an original piece of research which is written up as an article or report (dissertation).
