Criminology (Contemporary Drug Issues)

This programme has been designed to develop professional practice in complex contexts and promote advanced vocational capabilities based upon DANOS (Drugs and National Occupational Standards) criteria; the programme explores a range of issues and debates arising from contemporary patterns of drug use in the UK (such as heroin use, the normalisation of recreational drugs and the relationship between drug use and crime); students also examine critically national and international drug strategies; the programme is taught through lectures, seminars, workshops and within computer laboratories; it is student led and at times students conduct presentations within small groups; in addition to the formal contact time, there are opportunities to discuss work in individual tutorials.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant field. International applicants require IELTS at 6.5.

Course modules

Core modules include: Contemporary criminal justice; contemporary criminological theory; contemporary drug use; dissertation; social research methods.

Assessment methods

These include essays, coursework, case study work, SPSS exercises and presentations; the programme concludes with a 20,000-word dissertation.
