Sport and Exercise
This course is designed to prepare students for playing a leading role in the growth areas of sport and exercise; it stresses the relationship between theory and its professional application, and aims to develop knowledge, skills and expertise in a range of sport and exercise disciplines; students are encouraged to develop their own programme of study by selecting modules which have particular relevance to professional, academic and personal goals. Teaching is informed and underpinned by current research, which can be categorised broadly into 4 groups: physiology, biomechanics, psychology and sociology; students develop the necessary comprehension and critical understanding of theories, techniques and methodologies appropriate to research and advanced scholarship using practical sessions, workshops, laboratories, tutorials, seminars and research projects.
Applicants should have an Honours degree in an appropriate subject, or a degree plus experience, or additional acceptable qualifications; applicants with extensive relevant experience in an appropriate field and evidence of an academic contribution to that field are also considered.
Core modules include: Understanding research in sport and exercise science; development of the sport and exercise scientist 1; sport and exercise research project. Option modules: Sport and exercise physiology; sport and exercise psychology; student independent learning; biomechanics and anatomy of movement in sport; decision making and decision training in sport and exercise; development of the sport and exercise scientist 2; sociology of sport and exercise.
These include assignments, data-based evaluation, presentations, laboratory reports, critical reviews, case study and other research reports, original research and examinations.
