The programmes are arranged individually and may include attendance at selected lecture or seminar courses taken from these doctoral programmes or other programmes of study offered at the Institute, as well as reading, fieldwork, visits and conferences; students are assigned to a tutor who assist with research; subject to the tutor's approval, students may spend 1 term abroad on fieldwork.
Applicants must have at least 5 years' experience in relevant work in education and have proven ability to carry out the advanced studies which the programme requires.
Assessment is by: preparation of a report of 30,000 words, on which students are formally assessed for the award; the report should include a statement of student's reading and fieldwork, a critical survey of their field of study, and the conclusions that they have drawn; full-time students should normally submit the report within 15 months of the last day of the programme; part-time students should submit the report within 30 months.
