Editing Lives and Letters
Original research in the humanities, just as in the sciences, needs to be able to point to collections of data, and acknowledge bodies of evidence, as the bedrock for its innovative discoveries. This Master�s programme uniquely combines the technical skills of archival research and the most up-to-date strategies and techniques for online data organisation and presentation. The core module, Archival and Book Skills, is delivered in workshops, where the emphasis is on practical and group work, supplemented by compulsory field trips to a wide range of archives and specialist libraries. Teaching is also delivered through seminars, and research projects.
A minimum of an upper 2nd Class undergraduate degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in any appropriate subject, for example, English literature, history, modern languages, computing (information technology). Other disciplines will also be considered.
Core modules: Archival and book skills; information for graduate research; Latin for reading knowledge. Optional modules include: Confessional cultures in the Dutch Republic and England, c.1550-1700; dead things and demolition sites (cultural, visual and historical representations in France, 1580-1889); historical bibliography; how to build a biography; introduction to digitisation; the Italian Renaissance; medieval and Renaissance texts (resources and research techniques); men on the moon (cosmic voyages in the early modern period); the Northern European Renaissance; thinking with women (gender as an early modern category); web 0.1 (early modern information culture, c. 1450-1750); writing lives from letters.
Assessment is by essays, written examination, class presentation and the dissertation.
