Research specialisms of staff include: Mind, language, political philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, metaphysics, logic, philosophy of science.
For MPhil/PhD: a 1-year research degree in philosophy; for PhD: a 2-year graduate degree in philosophy (MPhil Stud or equivalent); all applicants for research degrees must submit two short pieces of work, of about 2,000 words each, with their application. If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent qualification).
Student take at least 1 module from each of the 3 categories, (a) theoretical (b) practical and (c) historical.
Assessment includes essays and a thesis.
Department has available a few awards, of a level to cover fees, normally made for 1 or 2 years for deserving candidates registered for either MPhil or PhD; the department also has a small hardship fund, and provides small grants to completing PhD students; Arts and Humanities Research Council.
