This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the practical skills required to create generative, emergent and responsive form, through exposure to real programming environments, alongside a solid grounding in analytic and synthetic techniques and the creation of physical systems engendering interaction and adaptation.
The normal minimum qualifications are a 2nd Class undergraduate degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Candidates are expected to have some basic computing experience. A 2nd acceptable qualification is a degree of lower than 2nd Class Honours standard, or an equivalent overseas qualification, in a subject appropriate to the programme, plus extensive background and experience in the field. The latter implies considerable experience as a professional at a senior level. For applicants without a 1st degree or full professional membership, but with relevant and substantial work experience in the field, a special qualifying examination may be set.
Core modules: computational analysis; computational synthesis; research skills (a); research skills (b); computational research project. Options: stand-alone MRes students take: extended personal research project; 1st year EngD VEIV students take: interdisciplinary group project; personal research project.
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops and seminars as well as individual and collaborative projects. Time is dedicated to studio sessions with experienced tutors who have a track record of research into architecture and computation. Assessment is through unseen examination, 3000 word term paper and project reports.
