Physics and Engineering in Medicine (Medical Image Computing)
Normally a minimum of an upper 2nd Class UK Honours degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a physical or applied mathematical science subject, such as physics, engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics. Candidates with other backgrounds may apply and are considered on individual merit, but successful candidates must have studied mathematics and physics at least to A-level standard (or equivalent) and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of basic concepts in computing.
Core modules: medical imaging (ionising); magnetic resonance imaging and biomedical optics; ultrasound in medicine; clinical practice; programming foundations of medical image analysis; information processing for medical imaging; image processing. Options: Students choose one of the following: computer-assisted and therapy; computational modelling for biomedical imaging.
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practical sessions, hospital visits, and an research project. Lecturers are drawn from UCL and from London teaching hospitals including UCL, St. Bartholomew's, and the Royal Free Hospital. Assessment is through examinations, coursework assignments, and the project dissertation.
