Speech, Language and Communication Needs in Schools

This course will provide you with a detailed understanding of special educational needs in relation to children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and the relevant current legislation. It will enhance your knowledge of how children develop speech, language, literacy and numeracy, and broaden your awareness of the development and needs of children with SLCN.

Entry requirements

A 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required, as well as either a professional qualification in teaching or speech and language therapy or at least 2 years' experience in an educational setting working with children with speech, language and communication needs.

Course modules

Core modules: Concepts and contexts of special and inclusive education; foundations of research methods and applied data analysis (city university); language, learning and development (city university); social, emotional and behavioural development; speech, language and communication needs in schools: advanced practice.

Assessment methods

Assessment is delivered via mixed mode, including face.to-face evening and daytime sessions at UCL Institute of Education and/or City University, and online learning. It is assessed by coursework and a dissertation of 12,000 words.
