Performing Arts Medicine

This is a unique programme providing specialised training to clinicians interested or already involved in treating this very special sector encompassing instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Entry requirements

A primary medical qualification (MBBS, 2 years post-qualification) or a 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university in a relevant discipline (e.g. medicine, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, nursing, sports science) or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

Course modules

Core modules: musculoskeletal and neuromuscular performance related injury; research methodology; environmental issues, travelling and touring, governance and the law; drugs and disability within the performing arts world; performance psychology; clinical management of the professional voice; assessment and rehabilitation of the performing artists; science of dance and music performance; clinical management of the professional voice.

Assessment methods

The delivery of the course is through lectures and tutorials, workshops, attendance of performing arts clinics and field-work alongside performers and at stage events.
