East European Studies

The course provides area-specific, language-oriented, advanced research training in the methodologies and approaches of economics, politics, sociology, history, culture and literature. The course offers 2 pathways, social science and arts and humanities, enabling students to tailor the programme to suit their own experience and interests. The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, language classes and laboratory sessions.

Entry requirements

Normally an upper 2nd Class undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

Course modules

Year 1: Beginner's new language module. Year 2: Intermediate language module; interdisciplinary area studies 2. Optional modules: Quantitative methods; advanced quantitative methods; qualitative methods; theories of social and political research; comparative analysis in social and political research; comparative analysis in social and political research; historical methods and approaches; theories of social and political research; understanding and analysing data; qualitative methods; comparative analysis in social and political research; contemporary cultural studies.

Assessment methods

Students will be assessed by unseen and written examinations, coursework assignments, essays and the research dissertation.

Sponsorship information

In addition to a range of UCL scholarships SSEES offers the Foundation Research Scholarship (£15,000 p.a. for 3 years); the Rita and Victor Swoboda Memorial Scholarship (£8,000 p.a.) and a number of lesser bursaries; in addition 7 scholarships per year are available for MRes students and 5 per year for doctoral students funded under the ESRC/AHRC/HEFCEsponsored Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS); UK/EU students may also apply to the AHRC for Masters or doctoral studentships and overseas research students may apply for an ORS award.
