Museum and Gallery Practice

This course equips students with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to assume a career as a leading museum professional within Qatar, the wider Gulf region or further afield. Through practical placements, students will gain a unique insight into the developing local and international museum sector.

Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university, a GPA of 3.3 out of 4.0 (US system), or another overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Degree class requirement could be waived for candidates with other exceptional qualifications, such as substantial professional experience in related fields.

Course modules

Core modules: exhibition project; interdisciplinary methods for heritage research; museums policies and practices; principles of museum and gallery practice; options: approaches to Islamic ceramics; the book and society; collections care and management; community archaeology; cultural theory for Muslim studies; debates in contemporary art curation; the digital museum; materials vs cultures; placement i; placement ii; preventive conservation; technical skills for cultural heritage.

Assessment methods

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and structured reading. Students undertake a 20-day professional placement. Assessment is through essays, presentations, portfolios, reports, oral examination and the dissertation.
