Modern Irish

This course has particular focus on the acquisition of specialised knowledge and skills in modern Irish for contemporary professional contexts; the intensive linguistic study, which forms the core of the course, is complemented by study of the discourse of contemporary Irish, including literature, media, film, language planning and immersion education.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a degree in Irish or Celtic, or professional or other qualifications which could be deemed equivalent; all applicants will be interviewed.

Course modules

Grammar, syntax, native idiom and usage in modern Irish; phonology in modern Irish; standard Irish: its application and future development; stylistics, translation and writing for professional contexts; effective oral presentation for professional contexts; contemporary literature and criticism in Irish; film in Irish; the discourse of contemporary Irish in the wider European context: minority language broadcasting and media, language planning, immersion education.

Assessment methods

Coursework and examination based assessment.
